Located at the base of the Arunachala Hill, Tiruvannamalai is one of the most sacred Shaivite pilgrimage centers in Tamil Nadu. The Arunachaleswarar Temple, with its massive towers and beautiful stone sculptures, is the heart of the town. According to belief, Lord Shiva appeared here as a column of fire, which is celebrated every year during the Karthigai Deepam festival when a huge flame is lit on top of the hill.
