Overview

Jhalawar is a small former princely capital in the Hadoti region of south-east Rajasthan, about 85 km south of Kota. The Garh Palace in the town centre houses the Government Museum. About 5 km away, Gagron Fort stands where the Ahu and Kali Sindh rivers meet, and is one of the six Rajasthan hill forts on the UNESCO World Heritage list. The twin town of Jhalrapatan, 7 km south, has the 7th-century Chandrabhaga temples on the river bank and holds the Chandrabhaga fair in Kartik. The Buddhist rock-cut caves at Kolvi make a longer day trip, about 90 km away.

The rivers fill and Gagron looks like a true water fort. The Hadoti countryside turns green.

Heavy rain can flood low roads and cut access to parts of Gagron and Kolvi.

How to Reach Jhalawar

Intercity connectivity and travel options

Jhalawar City railway station has trains to Kota Jn, about 85 km north, which has connections across India. There are no regular commercial flights nearby; Jaipur, more than 300 km away, is the usual airport. RSRTC buses run from Kota, Jaipur and towns across Hadoti.

Autos cover Jhalawar town and the short hop to Jhalrapatan. Hire a taxi for Gagron Fort, and a full-day car for the Kolvi caves. There are no app cabs.
