The Kolvi caves are cut into a laterite hill near Kolvi village in Jhalawar district. There are around 50 caves, including monks' cells, chaitya halls and stupas carved from the rock, with large figures of the Buddha in seated and standing poses. Most of the work is dated to around the 7th to 9th century and reflects the Mahayana tradition. The soft laterite has weathered heavily, but the rock-cut stupas and the view from the hilltop are striking. There are no facilities at the site, so carry water and go in the cooler part of the day.
