Gagron Fort stands on a low hill at the meeting point of the Ahu and Kali Sindh rivers. Water surrounds it on three sides and a moat closes the fourth, which is why it is called a jal durg or water fort. It was held by the Khichi Chauhans and later by the Sultans of Malwa, Sher Shah and Akbar, and is best known for the jauhar of its women during a siege in the 15th century. Since 2013 it has been one of the six hill forts of Rajasthan on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Near the fort is the dargah of the Sufi saint Mitthe Shah.
