Going to Kainchi Dham? Read This Before You Leave

Kainchi Dham now runs weekend shuttles from Bhimtal and Bhowali, and a registration system with a daily cap of 20,000 to 25,000 visitors is proposed. What is in force, what is only planned, and how to plan your visit.
Kainchi Dham, the Neeb Karori Baba ashram in the Kumaon hills, had far more visitors over the October long weekend than its roads and temple could take. The Nainital district administration is now bringing in rules to manage the crowds. Some are already in force and some are still on paper, so here is what is actually changing, what is only proposed, and how to plan your visit around it.
For the background on why Kainchi Dham suddenly became this popular, read Why Everyone Seems to Be Going to Kainchi Dham.
Kainchi Dham at a glance (as of 22 October 2026)
In force now
- Weekend shuttles. On weekends and festive days, outside vehicles stop at designated parking at Bhimtal, Bhowali and Vikas Bhawan, and pilgrims continue by local taxi, roadways bus or KMVN bus, PTI reported via ETInfra on 9 October.
- Weekend traffic plans. Nainital Police now issue a diversion plan before busy weekends. Crowd management meetings before every weekend are now mandatory, according to India Today.
- Checks on hotels and homestays. 22 registered units were fined Rs 10,000 each for running more rooms than permitted, The Times of India reported. Shops and stays have been told to display rate lists.
- No bathing or picnics in the Shipra. The Forest Department is monitoring the river beside the ashram.
- Action on bike taxis. Private motorcycles used as taxis face action, and bike taxis were stopped outright on 17 and 18 October.
Proposed, not yet in force
- Online registration. Modelled on the Char Dham system, initially for weekends.
- A daily cap of 20,000 to 25,000 visitors. The portal would lock once the number is reached.
- Darshan from 4 am instead of 6 am. This still needs the temple committee's agreement.
- The Ratighat bypass for traffic heading to Almora, Ranikhet and Kausani.
Is Kainchi Dham registration live?
No. As of 22 October 2026 there is no portal, no app and no booking for Kainchi Dham darshan. You can still walk in without registering.
The Nainital district administration has sent the proposal to the state Tourism Department. District Magistrate Lalit Mohan Rayal told The Indian Express on 8 October that the plan is to replicate the Char Dham model and to start with weekends. He said it would take "about a month" to develop the portal once the government approves it. A later Indian Express report on 13 October added the proposed cap of 20,000 to 25,000 people a day, after which "the portal will be locked".
According to Uttarakhand News Network, the proposal would put registration on the Uttarakhand Tourism Department's website, and the site would offer another date once a day is full. Visitors would also have to give details of where they are staying and parking. On heavy days, vehicles could be held in Haldwani with shuttles running up from there. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami spoke in favour of registration and a visitor limit at a traders' meeting in Haldwani on 9 October, the same report says. None of this has been notified yet.
Watch out for fake sites. Police were asked to act against websites posing as Kainchi Dham's. Until the state announces an official portal, anyone charging you for a Kainchi Dham "registration" or "darshan slot" is not offering a real one.
How weekend parking and shuttles work now
The exact plan changes from weekend to weekend, so check the latest Nainital Police advisory before you set out. On recent weekends it has looked like this:
- Coming via Bhimtal (the usual route from Haldwani and Kathgodam). Private cars from outside the district were parked at Vikas Bhawan parking, Bhimtal, with shuttles or public transport on to Kainchi Dham through Bhowali. This was in place over the 2 to 4 October long weekend, Dainik Dehat reported.
- Coming via Nainital or Gethia. Cars were parked at the Bhowali Sanatorium parking, with shuttle buses to the temple and back.
- Two-wheelers. For 17 and 18 October, two-wheelers from other states and districts were stopped at Kathgodam, bike taxis were banned, and heavy vehicles were kept off the road from 3 am to 11 pm, Khabarwala24 reported. Locals with ID got relief.
- Through traffic. Vehicles heading to Almora, Ranikhet and the hills beyond were diverted via Bhimtal, Dhari, Dhanachuli, Ramgarh and the Sanatorium to Ratighat road.
The practical upshot: on a weekend, plan on leaving your car at Bhimtal or Bhowali and finishing the trip by shuttle.
Why this is happening
Kainchi Dham normally expects around 25,000 visitors a day. Over the 2 to 4 October long weekend, reports put the daily number at anywhere from more than 35,000 to more than 50,000, and traffic backed up on the Bhowali to Almora highway. According to The Indian Express, 24.34 lakh people visited Kainchi Dham in the first six months of 2026, against around eight lakh in the whole of the previous year. The Curly Tales report of 12 October links much of the latest rush to the film Hanuman Ansh.
Several longer term fixes are also in discussion. These include separate entry and exit routes inside the temple, a valley bridge at the Bhimtal to Nainital junction, wider roads between Bhowali and Kainchi Dham, a route between Kainchi Dham and Hadtappa, and parking on Forest Department nursery land. The 18 km Ratighat bypass is the most advanced. About 8 km has been surfaced, and if the remaining work is approved it could open in four to six months, the district magistrate told The Indian Express.
How to plan a Kainchi Dham trip now
Pick a weekday. The new measures are aimed at weekends, because that is when the crowds are. A Tuesday to Thursday visit avoids the shuttle changeover and the worst of the traffic. Steer clear of long weekends. The annual fair on 15 June, listed by the Nainital district administration, is the busiest day of the year.
Go early. The temple currently opens at 6 am. If the proposed 4 am opening is approved, early arrival will matter even more.
Book your stay before you leave. Officials have asked visitors to book accommodation in advance, and hotel bookings may be checked as part of crowd control. The administration has been assessing bed capacity in Nainital, Bhimtal and Mukteshwar. Each of these works for a two night trip. Pick a property that is registered and displays its rate list. If the registration system does go live, you will probably need these booking details when you register.
Getting there from Delhi
- By train. Kathgodam is the railhead, about 43 km from Kainchi Dham according to the Nainital district administration. The district's rail page lists the overnight Ranikhet Express from Old Delhi, the Uttaranchal Sampark Kranti Express and the Kathgodam Shatabdi from New Delhi. Check current timings on IRCTC before booking.
- By taxi from Kathgodam or Haldwani. Taxis and shared cabs run from outside the station. GoCab Haldwani Taxi Service is listed on Yatrigo for station pickups and Kainchi Dham trips. On a shuttle weekend, ask your driver how far they are allowed to go.
- By air. Pantnagar airport is about 79 km away.
- By road. Kainchi Dham is about 9 km from Bhowali and 17 km from Nainital on the Nainital to Almora road.
What to carry
- Photo ID, which you will need anyway if registration starts.
- Your hotel confirmation.
- Some cash for shuttles and local taxis.
- A warm layer for early starts.
- A refillable water bottle.
Keep your bag light, since you may be switching between car, shuttle and queue.
What to do nearby
- In Nainital: Naini Lake, Naina Devi Temple, Snow View Point and Tiffin Top fill a day easily. Hanuman Garhi Temple pairs well with a Kainchi Dham visit.
- In Mukteshwar: quieter, with Chauli ki Jali and the Mukteshwar Dham Temple.
- Following Neeb Karori Baba's trail beyond Kumaon: see our Uttar Pradesh spiritual circuit.
- Making a longer trip of it: Binsar and Mukteshwar feature in our clean-air getaways from Delhi.
What this means for your visit
Kainchi Dham is moving from reacting to crowds to setting limits in advance. The shuttles and weekend traffic plans are already running. The registration system and daily cap are proposed but not yet approved. For now, a smooth visit comes down to three things:
- Go on a weekday if you can.
- Book your bed before you leave home.
- Check the latest Nainital Police advisory the day before.
Registration has not been notified yet, so look for an official announcement from the Uttarakhand government close to your travel date, and ignore any site that asks you to pay for a darshan slot.
