Chauli ki Jali

Chauli ki Jali

Overhanging cliff with a rock hole just behind Mukteshwar temple, known for valley views and rock climbing.

Chauli ki Jali is a set of overhanging cliffs about 250 m behind the Mukteshwar Dham temple. The name refers to a hole in the rock face, and local legend tells of a battle between a goddess and a demon here; many women visit on Shivaratri believing that passing through the hole brings the blessing of a child. The ledge looks straight down over the Kumaon valleys and is one of the best viewpoints in town. Local operators run rock climbing and rappelling sessions on the cliffs. The drop is sheer, so keep well back from the edge, especially with children.
