Naina Devi Temple is one of the most sacred Shakti Peethas in India, situated on the northern shore of Naini Lake at Mallital. According to Hindu mythology, when Lord Vishnu used his Sudarshana Chakra to dismember Goddess Sati's body, her eyes fell at this spot - giving the lake (Naini Tal) and the town their names. The presiding deity is represented by two eyes rather than a human form.
The original temple was destroyed in the great landslide of 1880 and rebuilt in 1883. The complex also houses shrines to Lord Ganesh and Goddess Kali. The most important festival is Nanda Ashtami, when a grand procession of the goddess is carried through town. Navratri also draws large crowds.
Open daily 6 AM to 10 PM. No entry fee. Located steps from the lake, easily reached on foot from Mall Road.
