Naini Lake is the soul of Nainital - a stunning natural freshwater lake shaped like an eye, surrounded by seven forested hills at an altitude of around 1,938 metres. The hill station was founded in 1841 by P. Barron, a British sugar trader, who discovered the lake and built the first European house on its shore.
The lake is divided into two sections - Mallital at the north end and Tallital at the south. Boating is the main activity, with pedal boats, rowboats, and gondolas available for hire. The northern shore is sacred, home to the Naina Devi Temple, and the famous Mall Road runs along the western bank.
The lake looks especially magical at night when city lights reflect off its surface. Best visited early morning or evening to avoid peak crowds. Boating is available year-round.
