Mukteshwar Dham is a Shiva temple on the highest point of Mukteshwar, inside the Indian Veterinary Research Institute campus. It is said to be around 350 years old and gives the town its name: local belief holds that Shiva killed a demon here and granted him mukti, or release. A flight of steps leads up from the road, past bells tied by devotees. The hilltop gives a wide view over the Kumaon valleys and, on clear mornings, the snow peaks to the north. Chauli ki Jali is a short walk behind the temple.
