Why visit
Best window for Zanskar Valley - Padum, Phuktal Monastery, Zangla Fort, and river rafting on the Zanskar River are all accessible. The Kargil-Padum road via Pensi La is fully open and stabilized.
Keep in mind
No ATM in Zanskar - carry enough cash from Kargil. Guesthouses in Padum are basic and fill fast in peak season.

Quieter shoulder months. June gives early-season access; early October has beautiful autumn colours and good road conditions.

How to Reach Zanskar
Intercity connectivity and travel options
Leh airport (~450 km) or Srinagar airport (~440 km) are nearest. Kargil is the practical base. Road via Pensi La (Kargil-Padum) opens mid-June and closes by late October. New Shinku La route from Manali side available July to October.

Local transport
Hired SUVs from Kargil (~240 km to Padum) are the only practical option. Shared taxis occasionally run Kargil-Padum during peak season. No public transport in the valley.
