Karsha Monastery is the biggest and most important monastic complex in Zanskar, built into a hillside roughly 10 km from Padum. Founded around the 10th century and linked to Guru Padmasambhava, it houses over 100 monks of the Gelugpa order along with murals and thangkas dating back nearly a thousand years. The annual Karsha Gustor festival brings masked cham dances to its courtyards. Its stepped, fortress like architecture and sweeping valley views make it Zanskar's most visited monastery.
