Why visit

Best window for Zanskar Valley - Padum, Phuktal Monastery, Zangla Fort, and river rafting on the Zanskar River are all accessible. The Kargil-Padum road via Pensi La is fully open and stabilized.

Keep in mind

No ATM in Zanskar - carry enough cash from Kargil. Guesthouses in Padum are basic and fill fast in peak season.

Quieter shoulder months. June gives early-season access; early October has beautiful autumn colours and good road conditions.

Pensi La road to Zanskar may still be opening in June. Closes from late October - verify timing before booking.

Chadar Trek - walking on the frozen Zanskar River from Nimmu - is a unique and intense winter adventure.

Keep in mind

Extremely cold with temperatures well below -20°C. Road access is completely closed. Only for fit, experienced trekkers with a licensed guide.

How to Reach Zanskar

Intercity connectivity and travel options

Leh airport (~450 km) or Srinagar airport (~440 km) are nearest. Kargil is the practical base. Road via Pensi La (Kargil-Padum) opens mid-June and closes by late October. New Shinku La route from Manali side available July to October.

Getting Around

Hired SUVs from Kargil (~240 km to Padum) are the only practical option. Shared taxis occasionally run Kargil-Padum during peak season. No public transport in the valley.

Quick Tip

Zanskar has no ATM, no fuel pump, and limited mobile network - carry cash from Kargil, fill fuel there, and download offline maps before entering the valley.
