Overview

Lachung is a high mountain village in North Sikkim along the Lachung Chu, known for overnight stays before the climb to Yumthang Valley and Zero Point. Wooden houses, prayer flags and steep forested ridges frame quiet village life at around 2,700 metres. Protected Area Permits are required for the North Sikkim circuit and are usually arranged through registered operators in Gangtok.

How to Reach Lachung

Intercity connectivity and travel options

Fly to Bagdogra or Pakyong (limited flights), or take the train to New Jalpaiguri (NJP), then road to Gangtok (~115 km) and onward to Lachung (~120 km from Gangtok). Allow a full day for the Gangtok to Lachung drive.

Local transport

Hired SUVs from Gangtok cover Lachung, Yumthang and optional Zero Point. There is no reliable public bus to Lachung. Same vehicle normally returns each evening since lodging north of the village is scarce.
