Overview

Karauli is a former princely capital in eastern Rajasthan, about 30 km from the railhead at Hindaun City. The old walled town is built from local red sandstone and centres on the City Palace, with the Madan Mohan Ji temple inside the palace complex. Most visitors come as pilgrims: to Kaila Devi, about 23 km away, where the Lakkhi Mela in Chaitra draws huge crowds, and to the Jain temple at Shri Mahaveerji near Hindaun. The forests around Kaila Devi form the Kailadevi Wildlife Sanctuary, part of the Ranthambore Tiger Reserve.

Why visit

The Lakkhi Mela at Kaila Devi runs for about two weeks in Chaitra and is the biggest event in the region, with padyatri groups walking in from across Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh.

Very heavy crowds, long darshan waits and road congestion around Kailadevi village. Rooms in Karauli fill early.

Why visit

Few tourists. After the monsoon arrives the sanctuary forest around Kaila Devi turns green.

May and June regularly cross 44°C. Monsoon rain can make rural roads slow.

How to Reach Karauli

Intercity connectivity and travel options

Hindaun City, about 30 km away on the Delhi-Mumbai main line, is the most convenient railway station. Gangapur City is the other option. The nearest airport is Jaipur, roughly 3.5 to 4 hours by road. RSRTC buses connect Karauli with Jaipur, Hindaun, Gangapur City and Dholpur.
