The Shri Mahavirji temple stands in the town of Shri Mahaveerji, near the Gambhir river in the Hindaun area of Karauli district, about 35 km from Karauli. According to local tradition, about 450 years ago a cow would give her milk at one spot on a mound every day. When the cowherd dug there, he found a coral-coloured idol of Mahavira, the 24th Jain Tirthankara, and the temple was built to house it. The temple mixes red sandstone and white marble, with domes and chhatris, and it is one of the most visited Jain pilgrimage sites in north India. The main annual fair falls around Mahavir Jayanti, when the idol is taken to the river in a chariot procession.
