About Kumbakonam

Kumbakonam is an ancient temple town in the Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu, set between the rivers Cauvery and Arasalar. Known as the City of Temples, it has around 188 Hindu temples within its limits, including the Adi Kumbeswarar Temple, Sarangapani Temple, and Nageswaraswamy Temple. The nearby Airavatesvara Temple at Darasuram is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Kumbakonam is deeply associated with Chola history and is home to the famous Mahamaham tank where a grand festival draws millions every twelve years. The town is also recognized as the birthplace of mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan. It sits at the heart of the Chola temple circuit alongside Thanjavur and Chidambaram.
