Nageswaran Temple, also known as Koothandavar Kovil, was constructed by Aditya Chola in the 12th century. Dedicated to Lord Shiva in his serpent form as Nagaraja, the temple is renowned for its extraordinary astronomical alignment. Sunlight falls on the inner sanctum for only three days during the Tamil month of Chithrai (April-May), earning the temple the name Surya Kottam. The temple showcases great Chola architecture and building technology.
