About Tamluk

West Bengal

Overview

Tamluk is the headquarters town of Purba Medinipur district, on the Rupnarayan River in West Bengal. It stands on the site of Tamralipta, an ancient port that linked Bengal with Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia, and the Chinese monk Faxian stayed here around 411 CE before sailing for Sri Lanka. The river later silted up and the harbour disappeared. Visitors come for the Bargabhima Temple, the Tamralipta Archaeological Museum and the ruins of the Tamluk Rajbari. It is about 85 km from Kolkata and works well as a day trip.
