The Chinese Fishing Nets of Fort Kochi are one of Kerala's most iconic and photographed landmarks — enormous cantilevered fishing nets fixed to teak and bamboo poles along the seafront. Believed to have been introduced by traders from the court of Kublai Khan between 1350 and 1450 CE, these are the only such shore-operated nets found outside China. The nets are dipped into the water in a rhythmic operation by teams of fishermen and raised with the catch. At sunset, the silhouettes of the giant nets against the golden sky create one of India's most spectacular natural photographs. Fresh fish caught here can be bought and cooked at nearby stalls.
