Santa Cruz Basilica

One of India's oldest churches, originally built in 1505 by the Portuguese in Fort Kochi, now a Gothic Revival minor basilica with magnificent interior frescoes.

Santa Cruz Basilica in Fort Kochi is one of the finest examples of Gothic Revival architecture in Kerala and a minor basilica of the Catholic Church. The original church was built by the Portuguese in 1505, making it one of the oldest churches in India. The present structure was rebuilt in 1902 and features a striking pastel blue and white facade with twin towers, an ornate interior with elaborate frescoes depicting the Stations of the Cross, and beautiful stained glass windows. The basilica was elevated to the status of a Cathedral by Pope Leo XIII in 1886 and later as a Basilica in 1984. It is a deeply serene and historically significant heritage site in Fort Kochi.
