Fort Kochi is a historic peninsular neighbourhood in Kochi that served as one of the earliest European settlements in India. The Portuguese arrived here in 1503 and established the first European fort in India, followed by the Dutch and then the British. The area is characterised by colonial-era architecture, heritage buildings, Indo-Portuguese churches, Dutch warehouses, narrow cobbled lanes, bougainvillea-draped courtyards, and charming cafés. Key attractions include Santa Cruz Basilica, the Chinese fishing nets, Vasco da Gama's burial site at St. Francis Church, and Mattancherry Palace. Fort Kochi's unique layering of Portuguese, Dutch, British, Jewish, and Indian cultures makes it one of India's most cosmopolitan heritage destinations.
