Makar Sankranti is a widely celebrated harvest festival in India, marking the Sun’s transition into the zodiac sign Capricorn (Makara). It is usually observed in mid-January and signifies the end of the winter solstice and the start of longer days.

The festival is known by different names across regions, such as Pongal, Uttarayan, and Magh Bihu. People celebrate by flying colorful kites, symbolizing joy and freedom. Traditional sweets made of sesame seeds and jaggery are prepared and shared. Holy dips in rivers are taken as a ritual of purification and gratitude.

Makar Sankranti honors the harvest and nature’s abundance. It represents new beginnings, prosperity, and positivity.
