14–15 JAN 2027
Makar Sankranti Kite Festival, Jaipur
Jaipur's rooftops fill with kites for Makar Sankranti on 14 and 15 January 2027; Jal Mahal and the walled city are good places to watch.
Jaipur celebrates Makar Sankranti in mid January by flying kites from almost every rooftop, from first light until dusk, with friendly kite fights and shouts of "Kaate!" whenever a line is cut. The walled city is the place to see it at its liveliest, and the Man Sagar Lake promenade by Jal Mahal on Amer Road is another popular spot. Til ladoo, gajak and pheeni are the festival foods, and after dark many families release paper lanterns into the sky. Please avoid glass coated manjha, which injures birds and people; cotton thread is the safer choice. Makar Sankranti is a public holiday in Rajasthan, so expect some shops and offices to close.
