Jal Mahal, the Water Palace, stands in the middle of Man Sagar Lake beside the road from Jaipur to Amer, with the Nahargarh hills behind it. The palace took its present form in the 18th century under the Kachhwaha rulers. When the lake is full, the lower four of its five floors are under water, leaving only the top storey and its corner chhatris showing. The palace is closed to visitors and there are no boats out to it, so people see it from the promenade along Amer Road, which is free and open all day. Late afternoon and sunset are the most popular times, when the sandstone glows and the hills behind catch the light. It is an easy stop on the way to or from Amber Fort.
- Address: Amer Road, Brahmapuri, Jaipur, 302002, Rajasthan, India
- Hours: The palace is not open to visitors. View it free from the lakeside promenade on Amer Road, open all day.
