The National Memorial Chorten is a large white stupa with a gold spire in the middle of Thimphu, built in 1974 in memory of the Third King, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. From early morning to evening, older residents walk clockwise around it, spinning prayer wheels and counting beads. Joining the circuit for a round or two, always clockwise, is a simple way to see daily life in the capital. Inside are shrines with painted images and statues.
