Torana Ganapati Temple

A Ganesha shrine at the entrance of the Sharada Peetham revered for a legend in which Lord Ganesha revealed himself on a doorway threshold to save the Peetham from attack.

Torana Ganapati Temple sits at the entrance to the Sharada Peetham campus and is the traditional first stop for pilgrims before darshan of Sharadamba. The deity Ganesha is worshipped here in the Kshipra Varaprasadi form. The name derives from a striking legend: about 400 years ago, the then Jagadguru prayed urgently for protection when armed attackers threatened the Mutt. He was directed by an inner voice to the nearest deity, and found Ganesha appearing miraculously on the threshold above his head. The attackers were misled and the Mutt was saved. The form has been consecrated and venerated at the same spot ever since.
