Sri Sharadamba Temple is the sacred heart of the Sringeri Sharada Peetham complex, dedicated to Goddess Sharadamba, a form of Saraswati worshipped as the deity of learning and wisdom. Adi Shankaracharya established the original shrine in the 8th century with a sandalwood idol; the current solid gold statue was installed during the Vijayanagara period after the original was damaged. The temple's eight-panelled gold doorway with Ashtalakshmi carvings is a standout feature. A Shivalinga said to have been presented to Shankaracharya by Lord Shiva himself is enshrined alongside. Navaratri draws its largest congregation of devotees from across Karnataka.
