Nishat Bagh, meaning Garden of Joy, was laid out in 1633 by Asaf Khan, brother of Nur Jahan, on a steep slope facing Dal Lake. Twelve terraces rise from the lakeside to a hillside backdrop, each level connected by water cascades and flanked by tall chinar trees. The steeply terraced layout gives it one of the most dramatic profiles among Kashmir's Mughal gardens, with sweeping views of the lake visible from every level.
