Lal Chowk is the political, cultural and commercial nerve centre of Srinagar, its name meaning Red Square in reference to the Marxist-era influence on the city's political life. The iconic Ghanta Ghar clock tower anchors the square, which buzzes with shops selling Pashmina shawls, Kashmiri spices, silver jewellery, carpets and electronics. The surrounding lanes branch into Residency Road, Polo View and Badshah Chowk, forming Srinagar's most walkable shopping quarter.
