Jamia Masjid in the heart of Srinagar's old city is one of the great mosques of South Asia. Founded in 1394 by Sultan Sikandar at the instruction of the Sufi scholar Mir Mohammad Hamadani, the mosque has been destroyed and rebuilt several times. Its most distinctive feature is the forest of 378 columns, each fashioned from the trunk of a single deodar tree, supporting four pyramid-roofed towers that mark the cardinal directions. The walled courtyard can accommodate over 33,000 worshippers.
