Dachigam National Park, about 22 km from Srinagar, is a high-altitude sanctuary covering 141 sq km of steep forested slopes and alpine meadows in the Zabarwan Range. It is the last stronghold of the hangul or Kashmir stag, one of India's most critically endangered deer species, with fewer than 300 individuals surviving in the wild. The park also supports leopards, Himalayan black bears and over 150 bird species. Visits require a permit obtained from the wildlife department in Srinagar.
