Chashme Shahi, meaning Royal Spring, is the smallest of Srinagar's Mughal gardens and the most intimate. Built in 1632 by Emperor Shah Jahan's governor Ali Mardan Khan for Prince Dara Shikoh, the three-terraced garden is centred on a natural spring whose cool, clear water is prized across the valley. The garden's Persian-style layout, pavilions and views over Nigeen Lake make it a calm retreat compared to the busier gardens nearby.
