Char Chinar

A tiny island in Dal Lake with four ancient chinar trees, an iconic Kashmiri image.

Char Chinar, meaning Four Plane Trees, is a small island at the centre of Dal Lake planted with four towering ancient chinar trees that turn the colour of fire in autumn. Reachable only by Shikara, the island carries the name Rupa Lank and has appeared in Kashmiri poetry and Mughal-era accounts for centuries. It is one of the most photographed images of Srinagar and a natural waypoint on any Shikara tour of the lake.
