Burzahom, meaning place of birch trees, is a Neolithic and Megalithic settlement on the outskirts of Srinagar dating back to around 3000 BC. Excavations from 1935 onwards revealed pit-dwellings used by hunter-gatherers, polished stone tools, bone implements, and later megalithic burial structures. The site provides the earliest evidence of settled human habitation in the Kashmir Valley and holds significant importance for understanding the subcontinent's prehistoric cultures.
