Baltal Valley

Baltal Valley lies about fifteen kilometers beyond Sonmarg at the foot of the Zoji La pass, its open meadows hemmed in by snow capped peaks and the fast flowing Sindh River. Each summer the valley fills with tents as it becomes the primary base camp for pilgrims taking the shorter, steeper route toward the Amarnath cave. Outside the pilgrimage season, Baltal is a quiet spot for riverside camping and photography, with clear views back toward Zoji La and the surrounding glaciers.
