Rohtang Pass
About Rohtang Pass
Rohtang Pass, located approximately 51 km from Manali at an altitude of 3,979 meters (13,051 feet), is a high mountain pass on the eastern Pir Panjal Range of the Himalayas. The name "Rohtang" means "pile of corpses" in the local language, referring to the challenging conditions that have claimed many lives over the centuries. The pass serves as a crucial gateway connecting the Kullu Valley with the Lahaul and Spiti Valleys. Rohtang Pass offers breathtaking panoramic views of glaciers, snow-capped peaks, and the Chandra River valley. During the summer months (May to October), the pass is accessible and becomes a popular destination for tourists seeking snow activities, photography, and mountain views. However, the pass remains closed during winter due to heavy snowfall and avalanche risks. The construction of the Atal Tunnel has now provided all-weather connectivity, but Rohtang Pass remains a significant tourist attraction and an important historical route. The area is also known for its challenging road conditions and requires proper permits for visitors.
