Shanti Stupa

A gleaming white Buddhist peace pagoda on a hilltop above Leh, built in 1991 with relics of the Buddha enshrined by the 14th Dalai Lama.

Shanti Stupa sits on a hilltop in the Changspa area of Leh at about 3,600 metres and is one of the most iconic landmarks of Ladakh. It was built jointly by Japanese and Ladakhi Buddhists in 1991 and enshrines relics of the Buddha at its base, placed there by the 14th Dalai Lama. The stupa has two levels: the lower level depicts scenes from the life of the Buddha and the upper level houses a large Buddha statue. Five hundred steps lead up to the stupa from below, though a road also provides vehicle access. The stupa offers one of the best panoramic views in Leh, particularly spectacular at sunrise and sunset when the surrounding peaks glow.
