Overview

Leh is Ladakh's main town, known for its high, dry, and sunny climate. Visitors come for Buddhist monasteries such as Thiksey and Hemis, especially during the Hemis festival season, along with Leh Palace, Shanti Stupa, and onward trips to Nubra Valley or Pangong Lake. Altitude sickness is common, so travelers are advised to rest on their first day or two, and Inner Line Permit rules apply for many onward routes.

Why visit

The only practical window for most travelers. High passes like Khardung La and Chang La are open, Pangong Lake and Nubra Valley are accessible, and daytime temperatures are comfortable. Hemis Festival in July is worth planning around.

Keep in mind

July and August are peak months - bike rentals, Pangong camps, and good guesthouses book out weeks ahead. Prices spike significantly.

Apr-May

Why visit

Quieter shoulder season before the tourist rush. Monasteries are accessible and the town is peaceful.

Keep in mind

Manali-Leh highway may still be closed in April depending on snow. Verify road status before planning. Nights are cold.

Oct

Why visit

Post-peak quiet season with fewer tourists. Landscapes turn golden and the light is beautiful for photography.

Keep in mind

High passes start closing from mid-October. Nights drop near freezing and some guesthouses and camps shut down.

Nov-Mar

Why visit

Chadar Trek on the frozen Zanskar river happens in January-February - a unique experience for serious adventure travelers.

Keep in mind

Extreme cold with temperatures well below zero. Most roads closed and tourism largely shut. Only for specialist expeditions.
