Magnetic Hill

A famous gravity-defying stretch of road 30 km from Leh where vehicles appear to roll uphill on their own against the laws of physics.

Magnetic Hill is a stretch of road on the Leh-Kargil-Srinagar Highway about 30 km from Leh. When a vehicle is left in neutral on the marked yellow box on the road, it appears to roll uphill on its own, seemingly defying gravity. The phenomenon is widely believed to be an optical illusion caused by the surrounding landscape creating a false sense of gradient. The site has become one of the most visited spots on the Leh circuit and a popular stop on the Leh-Srinagar road. The Indus River and the confluence of the Zanskar and Indus rivers are visible nearby. The Gurudwara Pathar Sahib, an important Sikh shrine, is located just a couple of kilometres away.
