Khardung La is a high mountain pass at approximately 5,359 metres, located about 40 km north of Leh. It serves as the main gateway to the Nubra and Shyok valleys. For many years it was popularised as the highest motorable road in the world, though this claim has since been revised. The pass is open from May to October and is a rite of passage for motorbike riders doing the Leh circuit. The views from the top extend over multiple mountain ranges in every direction. The Indian Army maintains a post and canteen at the summit. The drive from Leh to the pass takes about two hours and the road winds through spectacular high-altitude terrain.
