Ramabhar Stupa (Muktabandhan Chaitya)

The stupa at Kushinagar marking the cremation site of Lord Buddha, one of the most sacred Buddhist pilgrimage sites in the world.

Ramabhar Stupa (Muktabandhan Chaitya) at Kushinagar marks the cremation site of Lord Buddha after his Mahaparinirvana. The stupa, about 15 metres high, was built over the sacred ground where the Buddha's body was cremated with full royal honours by the Malla rulers of Kushinagar. It is one of the most significant Buddhist pilgrimage sites in the world. The stupa has been excavated and partially restored and is maintained by the ASI. Buddhists from across the world come to pay homage here, and the site has a deeply solemn and meditative atmosphere.
