Shila Devi Temple

Shila Devi Temple

Temple of the Kachhwaha royal family's goddess inside Amber Fort, off Jaleb Chowk, known for its silver doors.

Shila Devi Temple stands inside Amber Fort, opening off Jaleb Chowk, the first main courtyard. The goddess, a form of Durga worshipped as the family deity of the Kachhwaha rulers of Amer and Jaipur, was brought from Jessore in Bengal, now in Bangladesh, by Raja Man Singh I in the late 16th century. Her image was found as a stone slab, or shila, which gives the temple its name. The entrance has silver doors with reliefs of the goddess in her different forms. Crowds peak during the Chaitra and Ashwin Navratris, when special worship is held.
