Sambhar Lake, about 80 to 95 km west of Jaipur depending on the route, is India's largest inland saltwater lake and has been listed as a Ramsar wetland since 1990. Fed by seasonal rivers including the Mendha and the Rupangarh, it shrinks to wide white salt flats in the dry months, and salt has been harvested here for centuries. From about November to February, flamingos and other migratory waterbirds feed in the shallows; early morning is the best time to see them. The Shakambhari Mata temple stands near the southern shore. Plan a full day trip from Jaipur, and carry water and sun protection, as there is very little shade.
- How to Reach: About 80 to 95 km west of Jaipur, around 1.5 to 2 hours by car via Phulera, which is about 8 km from Sambhar town. Trains from Jaipur also stop at Phulera Junction, from where a local cab or auto is needed.
