Royal Gaitor

Royal Gaitor

Carved marble and sandstone cenotaphs of Jaipur's Kachhwaha rulers in a quiet valley below Nahargarh, off the Amer road.

Gaitore ki Chhatriyan, the royal cenotaphs, stand in a narrow valley below Nahargarh Fort, just off the road from Jaipur to Amer. From the time of Sawai Jai Singh II, the city's founder, the Kachhwaha rulers were cremated here, and each has a chhatri, a domed memorial pavilion on carved pillars, built in marble or sandstone. Jai Singh II's own cenotaph, in white marble with fine relief carving, is the grandest. It is one of the quietest heritage sites in the city, with few visitors even in season, and the carving rewards a slow walk.
