Jhalana Leopard Conservation Reserve covers about 20 sq km of dry forest and rocky hills on the south eastern edge of Jaipur, almost surrounded by the city. It is one of the best places in India to see a leopard so close to a city, and jeep safaris run in morning and afternoon shifts from the main gate near Malviya Nagar. Besides leopards, look out for striped hyenas, jackals, nilgai and many birds. Safaris are booked through the Rajasthan forest department's online portal or at the gate, and the shifts fill up on winter weekends. Kalakya Mata temple sits about 1 km inside the forest.
