Garh Ganesh Temple

Garh Ganesh Temple

Hilltop Ganesh temple above the north of the walled city, reached by about 365 steps, with its idol of Ganesh as a child without a trunk.

Garh Ganesh Temple sits on a hilltop on the Nahargarh ridge above the northern edge of the walled city. Tradition says Sawai Jai Singh II built it at the time of the Ashwamedha yagya he performed before founding Jaipur, and that it was placed so that the deity could be seen from the Chandra Mahal in City Palace. The idol shows Ganesh as a child without a trunk, which is rare. Reaching the temple means climbing about 365 steps, which takes 20 to 30 minutes, and the top has wide views over the old city and Jal Mahal. Wednesday is the main day for darshan, and a five day fair is held at Ganesh Chaturthi.
