Birla Mandir, formally the Lakshmi Narayan Temple, stands at the foot of Moti Dungri hill in Tilak Nagar, on Jawahar Lal Nehru Marg south of the walled city. The B.M. Birla Foundation built it entirely in white marble, and it opened in 1988; local tradition says a Maharaja of Jaipur sold the land for a token one rupee. The sanctum holds images of Vishnu as Narayan with Lakshmi, and the walls carry carvings of Hindu deities along with passages from the Gita and the Upanishads. The temple is lit up after dark, which makes the evening aarti the most popular time to visit. Moti Dungri Ganesh Temple is next door, so most people see both together.
