Bagru

Block printing town about 30 km west of Jaipur on the Ajmer road, known for its dabu mud resist and natural dye prints.

Bagru is a small town about 30 km west of Jaipur on the Ajmer road, where the Chhipa community has printed cloth by hand with carved wooden blocks for generations. It is best known for dabu, a mud resist technique in which parts of the fabric are covered with a paste of clay before dyeing, and for prints in natural colours such as indigo. In the lanes you can see fabric being printed, dyed and laid out to dry, and several family workshops show visitors the process and sell cloth directly. Weekday mornings are the best time to see the printers at work.
