Domed tomb building at the Begampur Big Mosque, Dindigul
The Begampur Big Mosque on Madurai Road is the largest mosque in Dindigul and one of the oldest. It is credited to Hyder Ali, who governed Dindigul for the Kingdom of Mysore in the 18th century. The mosque holds the tomb of Ameerunnisa Begum, a woman of Hyder Ali's family who died in Dindigul, and the whole Begampur neighbourhood takes its name from her. The domed tomb building stands in front, with the prayer hall and two minarets behind it. It is an active place of worship and gets very busy during Ramzan and Bakrid, so visitors should dress modestly and avoid prayer times.
