Abirami Amman Temple

Dindigul's main Shiva temple, popularly named after the goddess Abirami, with a large Chithirai festival in April and May.

Officially the Arulmigu Kalahatheeswarar Temple, this Shiva temple in the heart of Dindigul is better known by the name of its goddess, Abirami Amman. The complex has two pairs of shrines: Padmagiriswarar with Abirami Amman, and Kalahastheeswarar with Gnanambigai. Local tradition links the goddess to Kali, who was calmed by Shiva and married him. The temple is run by the Tamil Nadu HR and CE department. Its Chithirai festival in April and May includes flag hoisting, daily processions, the celestial wedding of Abirami Amman with Padmagiriswarar, and a car festival.
